Events in York in 2019

There is always plenty happening in York. Checkout this blog for an idea of some of the events to be enjoyed in 2019. The website www.visityork.org has loads of great information to help you plan and make the most of your visit

York Open Studios

York Open Studios is an annual community arts event which celebrates the best artists and makers living or working within a ten-mile radius of the city. Each year York Open Studios provides an opportunity for the public to visit selected artists’ studios and exhibitions.

6, 7 and 13, 14 April 2019.        Opening hours are 10am and 5pm each day.

Chocolate Festival at Easter – 19th to 22nd April 2019

Plenty of chocolate themed action in the city over Easter and in the run up. Take a peek into York Cocoa Works – this is a Chocolate Production, Chocolate Academy and Chocolate Development Centre in the heart of York - even a peer in the window is jolly interesting. Betty’s window at Easter is always a delight and of course a great temptation!

Tour de Yorkshire  2-5th May 2019

Annual cycle race drawing the crowds. This year one of the routes passes to the south east of the city (Pocklington and Selby). See if you can spot the painted bicycles that sometimes adorn the roadside of buildings!

York Pride 8th June 2019

The atmosphere of this LGBT festival is so upbeat. Enjoy the colourful parade and checkout the various participating venues – many offering discounted entry, drinks etc. Buy a wristband and give it your support!  We do!

Summer Regatta 23rd June 2019

If you like to watch a bit of rowing, take up a table on the terrace of the Starr in the City, order some Pims, or  G&T’s, hope the sun shines and watch all the rowing crews battle it out over the finish line in front of you. Plenty of action and always some exciting close finishes. (pretend it’s Henley without the Hoorays)

Early Music Festival  5-13th July

York’s National Centre for Early Music plays host to this the UK's largest festival of classical music written before 1750. Based in the delightful St Margaret’s Church in Walmgate. (which as it happens is also where I go to give blood!). This is a little area of the city often missed, but charming nonetheless.

Micklegate Soapbox Run 26th August 2019

Come and see the amazing variety of soapboxes and the colourful costumes that whizz down our cobbled Micklegate, launched off a vertiginous ramp! There is music and excellent street food and plenty of fun. You won’t see the likes of this anywhere else.

York Food and Drink Festival     20th to 29th Sept 2019

The centre comes alive with a bustling food fair! Tasty hot street food, of all varities. Big paellas, crepes, wraps and noodles, gourmet meats, cheeses, pies, fudges - the choice is endless and delicious. I'm afraid I turn into an utter greedy pig when this is on, because I want to try so many delicious looking things!

Yorkshire Marathon
20th October 2019

Hugely popular and open to all. Last year one of my guests was a competitor in this wonderful road race that weaves around the city and out along the wider area. Come and cheers the runners on… or sign up and get training!

St Nicholas Christmas Fair
14 Nov 2019 - 22 Dec 2019

Who can resist this annual extravagaganza? York is lit with twinkly Christmas lights and the little alpine chalets fill the central square selling seasonal goodies and gifts. Soak up the vibe, find fun gifts, get a little giddy on the mulled wine. Maybe a few snowflakes will fall to add to the ambience? Christmas is coming....
