Arty York!

Art Galleries, Open Studios, exhibitions - York has an abundance of places to see, enjoy and buy art. Something for everyone!

Living as I do, in York, I feel very lucky that we have in our small city, an abundance of places where you go and see wonderful art. Our own home is bursting with pieces of original art we have collected over the years and on our travels, but a fair few pieces have come from local artists and exhibitions in York. We've run out of wall space, so really have to resist the temptation to buy new pictures... but that's not easy!

Every year York Open Studios offers a wealth of fabulous works of all kinds and of an incredibly high standard. This year York Open Studios 2019 takes place in April on the 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th. Do try and go if you're in the area.

Our apartment also features a lot of original artwork, which we feel enhances the space and we hope our guests enjoy it. Many have said in their feedback how much they like it. I've stayed in plenty of Airbnbs and self-catering homes where the walls offer a sparse array of dreary prints, in old fashioned  frames that look like they were rescued from granny's attic. Bleugh. Well, not in York Popeshead Court ! Come and stay and see for yourselves.

One of my favorite pieces in the apartment is by Richard Burel and came from The Blue Tree Gallery on Bootham. I remember well walking past and seeing it in their window - and I had to make it mine! The colours of the river and the red boats of York are so vibrant.

Just opposite on Bootham is the Lotte Inch Gallery and then just around the corner from there is of course the York Art Gallery on Exhibition Square. Loads to enjoy in here and a superb cafe to boot... and don't forget the charming garden around the back of it!

In the heart of town you've got According to McGee near Clifford's Tower; Pyramid Gallery on Stonegate - an absolute treasure trove of beautiful things created by talented people, in a wonderful quirky old building; Village Gallery on Colliergate.

City Screen, our funky little cinema off Coney Street, with its cosy bar/cafe on the riverside also often has eclectic  collections of local artists' work on display and for sale. Across the river, head up to Micklegate and pop into my favourite eating place in York, Partisan and check out what is currently being exhibited there. In this wonderfully curated space you will not only be able to enjoy the most fabulous breakfasts, brunches, cakes, coffees, salads, amazing dinner menus and more - you can admire (and purchase) art works from the constantly updated collections. Walk  further up Micklegate and just outside the bar gate you'll find Blossom Street Gallery. Again, lots to love in here, art, ceramics, jewelry, cards and prints and very friendly staff.

A short way out at Telford Terrace, is Corner Gallery, actually the home of artist-in-residence Kay, where there is plenty of delightful work to snap up (I've got a couple of lovely ones from here) - check their website for times as it opens just on certain weekends.

The "art& show 2019" which is held at the racecourse is a 3 day event featuring over 100 artists and provides a great opportunity to see established and up and coming artists,  to browse and buy. This year the dates are Friday 25th – Sunday 27th October 2019.

York River Art Market will be back in Summer 2019, on Saturdays through June, July and August. Stroll along in the sunshine by the river (maybe with an ice-cream) and enjoy the artists displaying their work in an informal setting along the riverside.
